A Windy Day at the Rookery

These two herons were part of a small rookery in South Carolina. One February I visited it on a very windy day which made the scene more interesting! My favorite part about it is the way the herons' breeding plumes are blowing in the wind, especially the plumes on their crowns! I sprayed the paper (except for the heron parts) with a mixture of powdered graphite and water to give the background some texture and then completed the drawing with graphite pencils.
